So I think it's time for me to go on another shopping ban. Not that I got out of control after my last one ended, but with Christmas shopping, after Christmas sales and what not, my spending was up a bit in December. And I have a motivation to curb my habit again - my car.
I love my car, I truly do, but I did buy it used and I have already owned it for close to five years (which is mind blowing to me sometimes) and sadly, there are some bigger things that need to be done to it sooner rather than later.
Of course, my father in law and Nate would usually be the ones to take care of these things, but my father in law is now retired, so we're on the hunt for a new mechanic. We used to take cars to a family friend, but that is not an option I'm considering after my dad had a falling out with said friend. So, the hunt is on. Thankfully I've been given a couple of good suggestions, so I have options, now I'm going to call up a couple of them to see who has the best price for the job.
I do wonder just how much work I really want to put into the car or if I want to save my money and work towards buying something else, but I figure I'll at least start on some of the repairs.
If it's not one thing it's another, that much I know! I am really wishing I had that Money Tree in my backyard!

The end of the no buy
So tomorrow more or less ends my self imposed "no buy." As previously mentioned, tomorrow the Cities 97 City Sampler comes out and I wanted to keep my tradition of getting a copy, so when I started my month long shopping ban, tomorrow seemed like a logical day to end.
So now I am asking myself a few questions -
Have I learned anything from my month of no shopping?
I think I have learned a bit. I think that I am easily influenced by sales, to the point where maybe I used to buy something just because it was on sale. I think that I was a horrible impulse buyer, where I'd buy something because in that moment I really thought I needed it, when maybe I really didn't. I think I was the worst about that when it came to purses. I would get in "I want a new purse mode" and come hell or high water I'd buy myself one, whether it was a good idea or not.
I think that if anything, I will be able to more easily think through "do I really need this, will I still want it a week from now" than I was able to before. We have been looking at our spending in general and trying to be more budget minded overall, so I think that will help too. Day to day living is actually rather expensive.
Did I break my no buy at all?
Save for one pillow, nope. And I feel that the pillow was a necessity. I have been sleeping so much better since buying that new pillow.
So can I just go shopping like crazy now and buy whatever I want?
As I said above, I hope to be more budget conscious from now on and less impulsive about my spending. I think it's unrealistic to say I won't ever shop again - but I just hope to be more responsible about it in general.
Did you accomplish what you wanted with this project?
Yes and no. I proved that I can go without shopping and that I can curb unnecessary spending. But I don't know that one month is enough time to really see how it can help my savings. And the "necessary" spending is still there. We have to eat. The cats have to eat. The car needs gas. Those things cannot be avoided.
Overall, I am glad I did this. And besides tomorrow, I don't totally plan to just jump right back into "buying what I want" so to speak, because I do still have a birthday and Christmas coming up. I still have things I'm saving for, so in general, I don't see much changing in the days and weeks to come. I guess the best thing to do is go one day a time and see how it goes!

Fabulous Friday 9/23/11
Whew, we've made it to Friday again. It's been a week at times. Honestly, I'm just in a season of craziness, but I'm working on some changes and re-focusing on what's important and things are starting to improve. In the midst of it all though, I still have some Fabulous things for the week!
1. Returning shows - as I touched on in my post here, many of our favorite shows started returning this week and it's been nice to have some mindless ways to relax and unwind once again!
2. A new bag - yeah, I have a problem, I can admit it. But up in Pequot Lakes last week I found out that Fun Sisters has an OUTLET store up there. They call it "Thrifty Sisters" and prices are wayyyy low on stuff. I have been wanting a dark green bag, because one of my winter coats has a dark green in the pattern (and I wear a dark green hat and scarf with it as well) and I found one! And it was a great price. And yes I'm using it now even if it isn't winter yet. You know me, I'll be back to a different bag in a couple of days.
3. Brewed Beer - we got the last beer we needed to brew before Oktoberfest done on Monday night. It's so nice to have that finished, now we get the batches kegged up and focus on other things to get ready for the party.
4. FALL! - it is officially Fall today, it is my favorite season as I've mentioned many a time before! I have been loving the weather as of late too, especially sleeping with the window open on these cool nights and snuggling down under the covers. Love. It. I know they say we'll have "Indian Summer" next week and that's fine as long as the 90's don't come back, I can handle it!
And I am also finding it Fabulous that it is Friday, but that kind of goes without saying. :)
Happy Friday, Happy Autumn and Happy Weekend!
